Friday Workshops

NEW! On Friday June 9th Comprehensible Iowa is offering 3 hour workshops from 1 – 4 pm CST.

If you have struggled to encourage or implement reading, this is the place to get what you need. Bryce will demo reading strategies, training trips for these strategies and together, we will be practicing these strategies. 3 hours of classroom tested ways to teach independent reading approach to whole-class reading with differentiation, the wonder of read-alouds, and the power of embedded reading. Bryce authored Hi-Impact Reading Strategies to Accelerate Fluency and Proficiency (And Get Kids to Like It) A book dedicated to teaching kids to enjoy reading in and out of world language classrooms.

Classroom management is the foundation for joyful, equitable learning. Explore ways to set our students up for success: establishing and maintaining procedures and expectations, using nonverbal cues, encouraging low-risk participation, de-escalating conflicts, and designing CI activities that maximize engagement and language acquisition.

Experience a comprehension-based communicative language teaching lesson as a student or an observer of a beginning Mandarin Chinese lesson. If you are new to Mandarin Chinese, experiencing students’ perspectives can help you adapt your teaching to the needs of beginning learners of the language you teach. Participants who know Chinese can observe how Diane works with complete beginners and the process of introducing Chinese characters with no prior memorization. The session will model some typical classroom activities such as personalized questions & answers, PictureTalk, and reading as a whole class from a text in Chinese characters. We will debrief techniques and the lesson plan to notice what happened, and help you prepare to use these activities in your classroom.
